When talking about the fact that the planet is in a very serious condition, most of the time people think of Earths problems as environmental problems, like species extinction, in linear steps. Like it has nothing to do with them?
“You get the impression that you could dial it back at any time and solve all the Earths problems. But a new study showed that the problems are not linear. If you inflict enough damage, as we already have done you’ve shifted the planet into a whole new state and the damage spirals out of control.”
And it is humans themselves, that are a plague on the Earth that need to be controlled by limiting population growth, at least according to Sir David Attenborough.
The television presenter said that humans are threatening their own existence and that of other species by using up the world’s resources. He said the only way to save the planet from famine and species extinction is to limit human population growth.
“We are a plague on the Earth. It’s coming home to roost over the next 50 years or so. It’s not just climate change; it’s sheer space, places to grow food for this enormous horde. Either we limit our population growth or the natural world will do it for us, and the natural world is doing it for us right now,” he told the Radio Times.
Sir David, who is a patron of the Population Matters, has spoken out before about the “frightening explosion in human numbers” and the need for investment in sex education and other voluntary means of limiting population in developing countries.
“We keep putting on programmes about famine in Ethiopia; that’s what’s happening. Too many people there. They can’t support themselves and it’s not an inhuman thing to say. It’s the case. Until humanity manages to sort itself out and get a coordinated view about the planet it’s going to get worse and worse.”
Sir David, whose landmark series are repeated from Monday on BBC2, starting with Life on Earth, has also spoken out about the change in wildlife documentaries during his lifetime.
The 86-year-old said commentary from presenters like himself are becoming less necessary as camera work is able to tell a story.
“I’m not sure there’s any need for a new Attenborough,” he said. “The more you go on, the less you need people standing between you and the animal and the camera waving their arms about.
“It’s much cheaper to get someone in front of a camera describing animal behaviour than actually showing you [the behaviour].
That takes a much longer time. But the kind of carefully tailored programmes in which you really work at the commentary, you really match pictures to words, is a bit out of fashion now … regarded as old hat.”
Humans Are Killing The Planet
Earth Day, celebrated on 22 April, is the world’s biggest moment to reflect on the damage that is being done to our planet, and how humanity can help. And these charts show that there is much for people to do.
The designated day, which the UN hopes can help save the environment and the people who rely on it, is intended to help change people’s behaviour so that they can work to protect the planet.
As these charts show, that mission has never been more vital. But it has also never been more difficult.
The rise in global temperatures is causing the ice to melt. This affects sea levels and the habitats for animals who live in the Arctic. Animals such as polar bears whose habitat revolves around the ice are also affected by the changes.
This graph shows how much the sea levels have risen as a consequence of global warming. The hotter the earth gets, the more the ice melts, which leads to rising sea levels and thus flooding.
It’s no secret that the world population is booming. This graph shows the extent that humans are inhabiting the earth, putting pressure on the earth’s natural resources. There are around an extra 2,042m people living on the planet compared to 25 years ago
Greed is to blame
Let’s just start with by calling manifestations of greed by their true name. By greed, I mean the attempt of those who have plenty to get more, not the attempts of the rest of us to survive or lead a decent life. Just take a quick look at the Waltons of Walmart fame: the four main heirs are among the dozen richest people on the planet, each holding about $24 billion. And their wealth alone is equivalent to that of the bottom 40% of Americans.
In fact it is true that Humans are an Infection for the planet. Pure evil is man who seeks to enslave Mother Earth destroy all her gifts she’s given pure of heart. We terrorize animals before we kill them. Use chemical warfare to murder helpful creatures like bees. So self-absorbed and lazy to work with nature. Every living organism has purpose it just seems like ours is yes a thinking ugly all-consuming virus. And its all done in the NAME OF PROFIT & GREED.
A new scientific study also shows that if you want to continue doing as much damage to the planet as possible, you should continue flying. Take many vacations all over the Globe many times per year, then you can be sure that you are killing the planet in the most effective way.
I think Steven Hawking was so right when speaking at London’s Science Museum, Mr. Hawking insisted that we humans must change our ways, if we ever want to survive.
